The Good Hope Educational Initiative began in April 2008 when two professors at the University of Missouri School of Law - Rodney Uphoff and James Levin- wanted to create a non-profit organization to carry on the fund raising efforts they had undertaken to help the school children at the Kalksteenfontein Primary School (KPS) in Kalksteenfontein Township near Cape Town.

As they forged ahead with their idea, they invited Richard Oliver, Julie Ruth, and Brent Beshore to serve on the Board as all three of these individuals had developed their own connections to the Kalksteenfontein Primary School.
